MAYOR LIang Chao


With a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Princeton University, Dr. Liang Chao has been developing software to accelerate hardware designs and currently works at a startup focused on innovative printed circuit board design tools. She was elected to the Cupertino Union School Board in 2016, then to the Cupertino City Council in 2018, and was re-elected in 2022. In 2025, she was elected Mayor of Cupertino.


During her first term, Dr. Chao is proud of approving two multi-family/mixed-use projects on Foothill Boulevard, as well as the Westport development featuring condominiums, affordable housing, and senior housing. She welcomes responsible developers who respect Cupertino's character and value community input. Believing that the city should not be divided over a single oversized project, she aims to bring the community together by focusing on the common ground that drew everyone to Cupertino.
